Penguin Players Programming
About the Show:
The groundbreaking musical that set the stage for all that followed! Rodgers & Hammerstein's exuberant classic is a lively, tuneful musical full of cowboys, farmers, romance and fearless optimism. In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.

Artists: Northern Starz Penguin Players program is open to any individual age 16+ with a developmental or physical disability. Peer Mentors: The Penguin Programs utilizes a “peer mentor” system, linking each artist with a peer who can confidently support an individual with special needs. Mentors must be at least 10 years old. The peer-mentors work side-by-side with their partners, assisting them throughout the entire rehearsal process and on stage. The mentors are responsible for knowing the lines, songs, and blocking of their partners. They are on-stage during the production, costumed to match or compliment their partners. They participate in the group production numbers but are trained to remain “in the background” and provide direct assistance to their partner only as needed.
